Description

Working closely with Adderbury Parish Council, Lathams prepared detailed designs for a new Sports and Community Pavilion, on the edge of the village. The Parish Council had previously secured outline planning permission for the creation of sports pitches on land gifted to the local community via S106 contributions from recent housing developments.

The distinctive design puts the new, large-volume sports hall right at the heart of the building, that is 'wrapped' with a mix of changing rooms, meeting space, dance studio and storage. This makes the external envelope as efficient as possible, bringing benefits in terms of environmental performance. The new Pavilion also features a bar and function space, with direct access to a covered terrace, designed to provide flexibility for a wide range of events and activities, e.g. parties, celebrations and club events.

Proposed materials are simple and cost-effective, including slate-grey cladding for walls and roofs, as well as feature walling (local Hornton stone) at the entrance. The top of the central sports hall is expressed with attractive translucent walling, creating a soft glow after dark and acting as a subtle 'beacon' for the village.

Client Reaction

'Lathams have been totally engaged with the project from the Concept stage right through to Planning, when they have been proactive in dealing with Planning officers. They have always been readily accessible on phone or email and have managed to interpret the community’s wishes and vision for their new community building and sports facility. Adderbury PC would always be willing to use Lathams for future projects.'
