Description

We are working with Derby City Council and Wates Group to deliver transformational changes at the historic Market Hall that sits at the heart of Derby City Centre.

We have already completed the initial phase of the project, to refurbish the interior and exterior of the principle barrel-vaulted roof. The work included the creation of a new central lantern running along the ridge of the roof, to provide natural light, fresh air, and smoke control to the main trading hall. The design is based upon historic drawings together with a sensitive understanding of the building, its structure and its heritage.

The next phase of the project will see alterations to the ground and first floors of the Hall, to create an inviting, accessible and flexible space, capable of hosting the best of traditional and modern markets, with hot food stalls and small-scale events. The proposed removal of some of the impositions added in an earlier refurbishment project - such as the central lift and fixed stalls - will provide added flexibility and allow for a greater appreciation of the historic space. New glazing in the southern elevation will enhance the appearance and visibility of the building, which is set to address a refurbished public square, and provide additional space for the stalls and café to spill out onto Osnabruck Square.

"Lathams' relationships with Wates Construction Ltd and Derby City Council are excellent, including their close collaboration with the Council's Conservation Officer. They ensure good co-ordination with design sub-contractors and other members of the consultant Design Team. The quality of their design work is good and thorough, with consistently high standards being maintained."
