External refurbishment and internal reconfiguration to Grade II listed Market Hall
The restoration of Derby Market Hall has been an 8 year project, during which we have worked as lead design consultant with Wates Group for Derby City Council, to deliver transformational change to reinvigorate the historic retail heart of Derby City Centre.
The initial phase (completed in 2022), saw fabric repairs to the building envelope, including the replacement copper roof finish and the creation of a new central lantern running along the length of the roof ridge. We designed the new lantern based upon historic concept drawings for the original building, combined with a sensitive understanding of the building, its structure and its heritage. This provides natural light, fresh air, and smoke control to the main trading hall, which, together with the refurbishment and redecoration of the barrel-vaulted roof interior, has created an uplifting and welcoming space in the city.
The second phase of the project saw the removal of a number of 1980s additions to the building, to create an inviting, accessible and flexible space, capable of hosting traditional and modern markets, with hot food stalls and small-scale events. The removal of previous interventions - such as the central lift and fixed stalls - has enabled this increased flexibility and allows for a greater appreciation of the historic space. New glazing in the southern elevation has also enhanced the external appearance of the building, which is addressed by Osnabruck Square, the refurbished public square we also designed that allow for the trading and bar activity to spill out onto.
"Lathams' relationships with Wates Construction Ltd and Derby City Council are excellent, including their close collaboration with the Council's Conservation Officer. They ensure good co-ordination with design sub-contractors and other members of the consultant Design Team. The quality of their design work is good and thorough, with consistently high standards being maintained."
