Creating a vibrant new destination in Leeds
Lathams played a pivotal role in what is widely considered one of the most successful regeneration projects in the UK. Victoria County Arcade and the surrounding areas in Leeds had started to decline and were underperforming, so plans were initially drawn up to refurbish the arcade. Lathams extended these plans so they went far beyond simple refurbishment, including adjacent streets, with a view to reviving the whole area and creating an attractive and desirable quarter.
The arcade buildings were returned to their former glory thanks to a careful programme of repair and restoration, complemented by a glazed, split-level roof over the whole of the pedestrianised area on Queen Victoria Street. This has created a giant conservatory which is perfect for pavement cafes and street entertainment.
Lathams are delighted that we not only devised the strategy that brought about the commercial and physical transformation of the area, but that we also designed and delivered the project.
